Live & Learn | Have Mercy | Traveling Free | Fall Too Fast
Live & Learn
We live, we learn.
The love that makes us happy could get us burned someday.
So we play it safe with one foot out the door so our heart don’t break again.
It’s hard to accelerate if our feet constantly ride the brake.
Our hands aren’t firmly on the wheel if our heart won’t tell us how to feel.
We’re driving with a blindfold on…
But we roll along with eyes on the rearview.
And we know that some love don’t last.
And a watchful heart has to do with that.
But no need to cry – we’re still on the ride.
If it’s meant to be a relationship can survive anything.
The path to peace is always paved with bruises and skinned knees.
When the journey’s done you have a house for two, maybe plus one.
You can feel it.
Yeah, you can feel it.
And you use your heart for more than blood.
And you choose to stay in just because you’ve got someone who believes in “us”
They help move the stick while you push the clutch,
And together you move on down the road.
And you roll along and never bother looking back.
We might get burned twice, but the embers of the ashes help the new fire burn just right.
A new day is a blue flame, and it burns away the pain attached to any other name.
And we know that some love don’t last.
And a watchful heart has to do with that.
But no need to cry – we’re still on the ride.
If it’s meant to be a relationship can survive anything.
Gotta stop being so scared.
Gotta start being prepared for the fall.
This song is about not hesitating or holding back when you feel like you have found the person you were created for. We all know that there is always the possibility for heartache at the end of the love’s rainbow, but it is better to take a gamble on finding true love than to never play a hand. Love is one of the most amazing feelings on the planet, and to never take the plunge out of fear is one of the greatest tragedies known to a human heart.
Have Mercy
I’m strong and I’m able to move on.
I hear four letters, and I’m gone.
I say no one is gonna break me down.
And then you start coming around.
The way you’re shaking your hips like that?
Falling in love doesn’t seem so bad.
But I played the fool once.
This time around won’t be so easy.
Behave yourself, baby!
Stop whispering those things!
Good lord have mercy…
It never ends – the jokes from all my friends.
They say, “It just makes no sense –
A guy who always pushes love away,
Then celebrates a 3 week anniversary?!”
The way you’re shaking your hips like that?
Falling in love doesn’t seem so bad.
But I played the fool once.
This time around won’t be so easy.
Behave yourself, baby!
Stop whispering those things!
Good lord have mercy…
Something’s going so right, but you can’t stay again tonight.
I’m gonna need some time to get you off of my mind.
So go vacation – Paris or Jamaica.
Hibernating is fine with me.
Just don’t stop… Don’t stop… Don’t stop!
But I played the fool once.
This time around won’t be so easy.
Behave yourself, baby!
Stop whispering those things!
Good lord have mercy…
This song was written about falling in love and how the process can melt even the hardest heart. The man that is the focus in the song is attempting to avoid commitment, but in the presence of his personal kryptonite, he can’t help but fall for her. It has happened to me, and I’m sure it has happened to a lot of people.
Traveling Free
I’ve been traveling so long… so long…
I was stranded for a long, long time on an island of fear.
I was warned about the outside world but the mystery kept calling me near.
Someone told me, “It’s best to be free, no questions from anyone.”
The great unknown is crying out, “This is not what life is about!”
I’m traveling for the rest of my life.
I’ve been traveling so long… so long…
The grass is greener on the other side – filled with culture under a big blue sky.
I’m embraced by my destiny, like a kudzu vine covering.
Someone told me, “It’s best to be free, no questions from anyone.”
The great unknown is crying out, “This is not what life is about!”
I’m traveling for the rest of my life.
I’ve been traveling so long… so long…
Coming from the 9-0-4, this is what I’ve learned so far:
These are my people. This is my crowd.
Dismissing hype, calling mannequins out.
Asking questions, taking names.
No longer duped from the fear of flames.
So c’mon and say it. C’mon and say it:
We need tolerance and love, love, love.
So c’mon and say it. C’mon and say it:
We need tolerance and love, love, love.
Hate is not the answer – no matter what book you read.
Take that baggage off your back and travel free.
So c’mon and say it. People, c’mon and say it:
We need tolerance and love, love, love. (Yeah)
C’mon and say it. Let me hear you say it:
We need tolerance and love, love, love. (Yeah)
Traveling free… Traveling free…
We’re all gonna be traveling free.
This song was originally written years ago about a relationship ending, and the promise of the open emotional road on the horizon. But by the time I took this song to Nashville, a lot of changes had occurred in my travels with spirituality. The song soon became more of an anthem of my independence, and also a tribute to the city that inspired me to find myself.
Fall Too Fast
You’re living one lie at a time.
You have no filter between your mouth and your mind.
You say too many things that you know won’t last.
They call you a heartbreaker.
You fall too fast.
You fall too fast.
You never mean to hurt anyone.
You can’t be yourself and get the job done.
Making promises you’ll break by sunrise.
When the day brings light to your lies, you’ll see the fear in his eyes.
The pain in goodbye…
In his sighs…
And you’ll say goodbye.
You get swept off your feet before you even meet.
You’ll say anything to step out of his dreams.
Acting like you are the farthest thing from the lying, insensitive type.
But you’ll make him cry every time.
You’re so scared to be left alone you’ll play any role to take someone home.
Everybody knows that you’ll never change.
Until some boy comes along and beats you at your own game.
Well who’s to blame?
You get swept off your feet before you even meet.
You’ll say anything to step out of his dreams.
Acting like you are the farthest thing from the lying, insensitive type.
But you’ll say goodbye every time.
You get swept off your feet before you even meet.
You’ll say anything to step out of his dreams.
Acting like you are the farthest thing from the lying, insensitive type.
But you’ll make him cry every time.
This song is a dedication to heartless, shady women everywhere. I feel that usually in this situation, the antagonist is a male, but I wanted to expose a more accurate portrayal of who the heartbreaker can be at times – because like it or not, heartbreakers are on both sides of the chromosome fence.
